Information Systems as the Foundation of Society
Today, information technologies such as AI and data science have moved beyond being mere convenient tools; they are fundamentally transforming the very nature of society. From the ubiquity of smartphones and the "smartification" of television to the digitalization of administrative procedures, our daily lives can no longer function without information systems. In particular, the remarkable recent progress of Large Language Models (LLMs) is turning advanced intellectual tasks and programming, which were considered to be hard for machines, into a reality. It is reasonable to say that information technology has now become the most vital infrastructure supporting modern society, the "Social OS," in other words.
Professionals Who "Understand the Essence" Are Needed Now More Than Ever
However, as technology becomes more sophisticated and appears to solve anything like "magic," the value of individuals who deeply understand the essence of information technology has reached an unprecedented high.
Modern information systems are supported by high-speed networks, where data collected from vast arrays of sensors is consolidated into the cloud and maintained with strict consistency. To extract value from this massive data and perform machine learning or analysis, a deep understanding and insight into the underlying fundamental theories and algorithms are indispensable.
While AI automates many tasks, truly mastering it and implementing it into society requires knowledge of the principles of how AI operates. Ultimately, it is humans who must judge the correctness of AI outputs and take responsibility for them. In addition to specialized knowledge in information technology, a deep understanding of the problem domain and creative ideas for the optimal application of technology will be the essential tools for thriving in the coming era.
Leveraging the Advantages of Tsukuba to Become an Information Expert
Since its founding in 1977, the College of Information Sciences at the University of Tsukuba has served as one of Japan’s leading hubs for education and research specialized in informatics. Our college brings together a diverse faculty covering nearly every field of information science, providing comprehensive and in-depth education ranging from theory and hardware to software, intelligent science, and quantum computing. Furthermore, we offer unique programs such as the Embedded Technology Campus OJT and enPiT (2nd term).
Our university is home to cutting-edge research centers, including the Center for Computational Sciences, which boasts world-class computing resources, and the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research, which leads the way in AI studies. Here, research that breaks into unknown frontiers unfolds every day. Moreover, "Tsukuba Science City" hosts numerous national and private research institutes beyond our university, forming a rare global network of knowledge where these entities closely collaborate.
By maximizing the unparalleled geographical advantages of Tsukuba, you can master the essence of information technology and take flight as a professional leading the next generation. I sincerely look forward to learning and conducting research alongside all of you who share this ambition here in Tsukuba.
